We’re baaaack

First off, happy mother’s day to all the great moms out there. An author once said, “A mother is a person who seeing there are only four pieces of pie for five people, promptly announces she never did care for pie.”

Second, I sincerely apologize for being MIA the last few weeks. School is nutty lately with finals, IB exams, and the dreaded Extended Essay due next week (which I have yet to start). Not to mention prom last weekend and the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Third, speaking of hockey, I’d like to give a shout out to the Flyers: it was a great season guys, you fought well until the end and I already can’t wait for next year when we’ll go even farther.

On to the good stuff! Going all the way back to Spring Break, I unfortunately didn’t go anywhere warm, but I did make a kick-ass carrot cake on Easter. It’s from the Frog Commissary cookbook: http://www.grouprecipes.com/14539/the-frog-commissary-carrot-cake.html.

In honor of the Royal Wedding on the 29th, I made these lemon cookie pies (they seemed like something you’d have at tea!): http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/claire-robinson/lemon-pie-cookies-recipe/index.html. They come out of the oven a little crunchy but after the sit for a while with the icing in between they’re nice and soft.

Yesterday, a few friends and I ventured down to Reading Terminal Market for the ultimate selection of awesome food. I started my lunch with a peking duck roll…

…and finished with some Basset’s ice cream. Guatemalan Ripple on the bottom with Gadzooks on the top. mmmm. There was also a brisket sandwich with sharp provolone from DiNic’s in between.

That’s all I have for today, but I’ll definitely post the lasagna that I made my mom for dinner tomorrow. Here’s some new tunes I’ve found recently:

Rainbow Cake

Thought I’d brighten up your week a little with some Rainbow cake, or happy cake, or obnoxiously colorful cake. The name is not the point but this cake looks ridiculously cool and requires little skill in the baking department. Now I know I am not the first to post about a Rainbow cake in fact I actually figured out how to do it from http://www.omnomicon.com/rainbowcake . Instead of using the Sprite, Jello and Whipped topping in my cake I stuck with the traditional box directions.  Now feel free to make your cake from scratch if you want to but I was feeling a little lazy and just wanted some cake. When I brought this cake to some of my friends they were really impressed, little did they know how easy it really was. Enjoy! -RJ

Manic Monday

Howdy world! Sorry I’ve been MIA lately, I had quite the busy weekend. My mama was in Nashville and my dad was in Antigua on his honeymoon so I kept myself busy at ballet and cooking various things with Becca. I also went on a minor JCrew shopping spree, but shh don’t tell mama.

Becca and I made this: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2011/03/sour-cream-noodle-bake/ on Friday night for dinner and it was great. The Pioneer Woman is awesome if you need any kind of recipe, she has all sorts of great stuff.

I also baked this last night: http://www.howsweeteats.com/2011/03/triple-layer-cookies-and-cream-crunch-bars/. It came out pretty well, but the bottom layer was a little bit dry so I’d suggest cooking it for 20-25 minutes.

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m a HUGE Flyers fan (#1 in the Atlantic division!!!!!) and I coincidentally got Flyers themed sushi Saturday night:

Just a fair warning, expect some fanatic playoff posts in the coming weeks.

You’ve probably heard of Chiddy Bang, at least I hope so. I recently found a video of one of their freestyles and it’s definitely worth listening to:

Chiddy and Big Sean teamed up a few months ago to make this next song. Check out the video too, it’s nice:

John Butler is one of the most amazing guitarists I’ve heard. His song Ocean is an instrumental, and it’s just incredible. It’s a little long but keep listening and watch the video cause he does some neat stuff:

Wiz Khalifa’s new album, Rolling Papers, is good, but I haven’t gotten a chance to really listen to it yet. I do like this song a lot though:

And to satisfy all tastes of music, I’m throwing in some country to wrap up the night. My mama just so happened to see the man with the sexiest voice ever, Josh Turner, at a bar in downtown Nashville. This is one of my favorites by him. I’m pretty sure I would follow him to the ends of the earth if he sang it to me hehe:

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…

I feel like that quote could pretty much sum up junior year. We all whine about the stress of this year, and I hate to contribute to it, but it truly is awful. Between ACTs, the IB program, and trying to cram in every extracurricular activity possible to pad my resume, sleep and a social life have become optional. But in retrospect, junior year has been a period of personal growth and beneficial new experiences for us all. If you can’t find anything else that’s been positive about this year, at least appreciate that. Given, the hoards of work I have this week and an upcoming IB Chemistry exam in May – that decides the fate of my diploma, might I add – I haven’t had much time for cooking/baking. I ended up eating leftover meatloaf at 10pm last night after ballet class. And then I forgot to pack breakfast for school today and lunch isn’t for another half hour. Wow, my life really does revolve around food.

I got into The Roots early on in sophomore year, and their music really spoke to me. I love that they aren’t like most rap groups, and have a real beat behind some deep lyrics. They definitely have that Philly soul sound. I went to this ballet exposition a few summers ago, and heard this song by Joanna Newsom:

Then when The Roots’ new CD, How I Got Over, came out, I heard this one, and had a fantastic moment of déja vu:

And for another Philly artist.. I love this song by Tayyib Ali:

I couldn’t agree more with Tayyib on this one, I would really love to be a kid again. As great as it is being independent and having the benefits of being older, I don’t think I’m ready to go off to college in a year and a half.

I should get to work on the three pages of Spanish work that I have to finish in the next few minutes, but I can’t stop thinking about the omelet that I’m getting for lunch. om nomnomnom….

Snarky sundry?

Some of you may be wondering whaddup with the weird name. A sundry is an assortment of things and we figured it was the best way to describe what this blog is. It also kinda reminds me of sundried tomatoes… And snarky cause..we’re not sure how else to describe ourselves. In the past few months Becca and I became tight while we bonded over our love of food, so we thought it might be fun to impart that love on you all. We’ll try to post as often as possible and include recipes. I’ll also be posting various songs that I’m into – some new, some diamonds in the rough, some oldies, all awesome.

Well mother nature is certainly playing into the “April showers bring May flowers” cliché, so I’m using the gloomy weather to rationalize me baking this:

Yes, it is indeed what you think it is. Chocolate chip cookies baked into brownies.

They’re really easy, just take a chocolate chip cookie mix and a brownie mix (shout out to Betty Crocker). Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees. Make the brownie batter and pour it into a 13×9 pan. Make the cookie dough, and put it in 1-inch balls in the brownie batter (make sure you press them down into the batter). Bake for 35-40 minutes, let stand for an hour (while you drool), and bon appetit!

I have a confession, I have a girl crush on Nicki Minaj. I said it. So my friend (hi emkrem) and I saw her last weekend with Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, Meek Millz, and DJ Khaled. Ghetto, yes, but also really frickin’ great. This is one of my favs by her:

Alright, one last one for the night. On a TOTALLY different note, I love Vampire Weekend, and this song came on in the car on my drive to school today and it’s been stuck in my head ever since:
